Dress: Stop Staring
1930s cape: ebay
Vintage leather gloves: Ray’s Ragtime
Shoes: Aldo
Hat: The Indra Original Millinery

I was looking forward more to what I was going to wear, over performing at a 900 seat venue for NYE.  Yes!  Finally!  An opportunity to wear that dress that’s been hanging in my closet, still wrapped in plastic, a result of an impulse buy on some drunken night on the internet.  So yes, I was stoked.   Even went so far as to ask The Indra, to wear one of her amazing hats for the occasion.  Unfortunately I woke up on Dec 31st with a little sore throat… I knew what was coming.   Before I went on stage to do my set, my nose was already running.  During the finale of the show, some of my runny nose even dripped right on my dress!  And at the after party at the Punch Line, I was full-on sneezing and blowing my nose.   But, hey, at least I looked good!

Happy New Year, everyone!

RIP Jean Carroll

I just read this NY Times article.  I’m saddened that I didn’t even know who she was until she died.  I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without women like her.  It’s amazing the trailblazing she did:

“When Ms. Carroll came to prominence, no woman was expected to sustain a comedy act by herself; traditionally (think of George Burns and Gracie Allen), a woman had a straight man beside her as a counterweight. Nor was she supposed to be hugely attractive: The combination of feminine wit and beauty seemed too potent a cocktail to foist on the American public.”

Here she is on a popular Sunday evening variety show from April 5, 1959:

Maybe

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

I was driving home tonight thinking about a video I could make.  But then I realized I made a video just like that three years ago.  So, with that, I give you the video I made three years ago:

I’m definitely, by far, a different person than who I was back then.  And I’m indeed going through much different things, but something about this video resonates with me right now.  I think it’s the overarching idea of not having control, and not being able to have the control to get what you want.  That and the loneliness.  Le sigh!

Oh, Dating

I made this video the other night.  It pretty much encapsulates my thoughts on dating at the moment.

Fall in Love Friday – MVN’s Top 5 Wants

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

As most of you know, I’m poor.  My day job cut my hours, and then cut my hours AGAIN.  So items on my wish list will have to stay on my wish list.

Mary Van Note WANT #1

Shoes!

Ugh.   So beautiful it hurts.   Hand tooled leather platform sandals from Remix Vintage.  They’re on sale for $278.   If anyone wants to be my hand tooled leather platform sandals fairy, I’m a size 10.

Mary Van Note WANT #2

Blouse!

The Peter Pan blouse from Urban Outfitters.  Oh $38, I wish I had you.   I swear this blouse would go with everything in my closet.  EVERYTHING!

Mary Van Note WANT #3

Hard Bonnet Hair Dryer!

This is the BaByliss Thermal Ionic Hard Hat Dryer from Amazon.com but really any hard hat hair dryer would do.  I’ve been keeping my eye on craigslist for some used ones.  But I ain’t got money for even a used one.  I want some killer hair, yo!

Mary Van Note WANT #4

Rain Bonnet!

For a while I’ve been complaining to my friends, “Where in the world do you buy old lady rain bonnets? I MUST PROTECT MY DO IN THIS F’N RAIN!”  Well, leave it to Walter Drake, carrier of bunion sleeves and snuggies to carry the elusive old lady hair protector.

Santogold!

Santogold.  I found this artist while listening to Pandora and fell in love instantly. I really dig this video, in all its gory creative splendor:
